This impetus of this piece came from the overlapping, inseparable dimensions of space and time of the Kaluli people of Papua New Guinea, as described by the ethnomusicologist Steven Feld. In a similar way that the Western notion of “harmony” can be a metaphor for musical as well as social relationships, Feld writes that the Kaluli’s notion of “lift-up-over sounding” (or dulugu ganalan in the Bosavi language) is a multi-faceted metaphor which characterizes the synchronizing of chaos, or the imprecise layering of elements in patterns that are intrinsic to their natural movement.
